Oblivion, the new sci-fi movie starring Tom Cruise, destroyed the competition at the box office this weekend, taking in $38.2 million for an easy first place finish. It's Cruise's fifth-highest grossing opening weekend ever, and his highest non-sequel debut since 2005's War of the Worlds, Box Office Mojo reports.
Coming in behind Oblivion was the Jackie Robinson biopic 42, which earned $18 million in its second week. Holding steady at No. 3 was animated flick The Croods with $9.5 million, and rounding out the top five were Scary Movie 5 ($6.3 million) and G.I. Joe: Retaliation ($5.8 million).
The Place Beyond the Pines benefited from its expansion into more than 1,000 additional theaters this weekend, and jumped up from 10th place to sixth with a haul of $4.7 million.
And landing in the Top 10 for the seventh week in a row was Oz the Great and Powerful with $3 million.
