Box Office: The Possession Wins Slow Holiday Weekend
Horror film The Possession came in No. 1 at the box office over Labor Day weekend, while Lawless came in second and Oogieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventure set a record for one of the worst openings of all time.
The Possession, a supernatural thriller starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan took in $17.7 million in its first three days, earning the top spot while opening in just over 2,800 theaters, according to Box Office Mojo. If The Possession's four-day total hits $21.3 million, which it's estimated to, that would make it the second-highest Labor Day weekend opening of all time, after 2007's Halloween remake.
Expendables 2 stays on top; Obama documentary rises
A more dubious distinction went to Oogieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventure, whose earnings of $445,000 in 2,160 locations over the weekend made it the worst debut ever for a movie in more than 2,000 theaters.
Lawless, starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy, earned an estimated $10 million over the three-day weekend to come in second place, while The Expendables 2 dropped 34 percent to come in third, grossing $8.9 million over the three-day weekend. Taking into account Monday's estimated totals, the movie has earned $68.6 million, more than $14 million less than the original.
The Bourne Legacy came in fourth place with $7.3 million, and ParaNorman closed at No. 5 with $6.57 million.
The Odd Life of Timothy Green and The Dark Knight Rises both had strong holds, coming in sixth and seventh with $6.25 million and $6.1 million, respectively.
Political comedy The Campaign earned $5.7 million, while the controversial political documentary 2016 Obama's America expanded to 1,747 locations (from 1,091), but fell 14 percent to $5.6 million.
Rounding out the top 10 was Hope Springs, which brought in $4.7 million over the three-day weekend.
