BOX OFFICE: ‘Neighbors’ A Raucous No. 1 For Around $49M As ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′ Drops 61%; ‘The Other Woman’ On Strong Legs; ‘Heaven’ Surprises … Again

BOX OFFICE: ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ Slides Hard Saturday But Still Phenom $48M+; ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ Won’t Break $30M And Bows At No. 3

OPENING: Neighbors (UNI) trashes Spider-Man 2 with around $49M weekend; Uni said $51M+ but ends at around $49M; Legends Of Oz: Dorothy Returns (FREE) earns an impressive A CinemaScore, but gross doesn’t show it; Moms’ Night Out (Sony/TriStar) lights out in lackluster performance; Chef (OPRD) on six screens for a stellar $34K per screen.

6TH UPDATE, 2:20 PM: Final box office numbers are in and the numbers are pretty much as we said this early AM. Certainly, Universal had to know on Sunday morning that the likelihood of a $51M weekend for Neighbors was a bit of a stretch. But even retailers know that $2 sounds more expensive than $1.99 … and $48.8M doesn’t sound as good as $49M or even $50M. So, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ended with only $35.5M and Fox’s The Other Woman really kicked it with $9.6M for the three-day as did Sony’s other film Heaven Is For Real which dropped only 13% from last weekend to pulled in another strong $7.4M; the lower-budgeted pic from director-writer Randy Wallace has grossed $75.7M. The two newcomers — Moms’ Night Out and Legends Of Oz: Dorothy Returns — didn’t open well, and this despite an A CinemaScore for the latter animated film.

Opening next week: Godzilla from Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures which is going to take more of Spidey’s breath away; Million Dollar Arm (Disney) which had sneaks on Saturday in 416 theaters; Chef, which had a great start this past weekend on six theaters from Open Road, will expand; and, finally, The Immigrant (The Weinstein Company) the Jeremy Renner, Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard starrer.

5th UPDATE, MONDAY 7:45 AM: Neighbors will finish the weekend right around $49M not $51M (as Uni hoped for), but still a fantastic opening and good counter-programming. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will finish a little lower than expected, too, but still at its 61% drop for $35.6M. It’s making up its money in international markets, kicking it in China. (See Nancy Tartaglione’s International report here for ASM2 grosses in China and Neighbors great opening around the globe, too. Neighbors now has a ww gross of $82.7M) Sony was right on the money with its prediction on Mom’s Night Out with around $4.2M/$4.3M+ for the 3-day but Heaven Is For Real is higher (again) than anyone expected, closing out the Mother’s Day weekend with around $7.4M to $7.5M (it played stronger than expected on Sunday – up 17%). And The Other Woman? It’s well-heeled at No. 3 to gross $9.5M to $9.6M+ for Fox. The other newcomer, Legends Of Oz: Dorothy’s Return – pretty much as expected with roughly $3.6M. The Top 20 chart will be coming later today. Chef served up a healthy $205K for a per of $34K. (See Brian Brooks Specialty report here). But that’s how it looks this morning, everyone.

4th UPDATE, SUNDAY 8:39 AM: Sony just weighed in with its numbers for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Heaven is For Real and Moms’ Night Out and all three are on the high end of, well, let’s put it this way … Universal and Sony are both hoping for a heavenly holiday Sunday. Sony is thinking that Spider-Man‘s hold on Sunday will be much better than what all others believe and will kick in $37.2M and that Heaven is for Real will receive a miraculous $7M and Moms’ Night Out will gross over $4M to rest $4.2M. “We think that Mothers Day is going to be a good day,” said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution. “We’re meeting and exceeding our goals.” Universal is thinking the same with its $51M estimate for Neighbors. Perhaps they are right and Moms will be storm-trooping into the theaters today. Gives new meaning to ‘your Mom wears army boots.’

3rd UPDATE: SUNDAY, 7:12 AM: Universal’s Neighbors may take in around$49M+ over the 3-day (which includes $2.5M from Thursday late nights). The Frat pac comedy dropped only 9% last night (the estimates below were calculated on a 10% drop from Friday to Saturday) and depending on Sunday’s moviegoing, if it drops only 30% today, it could go a bit higher. Universal is thinking it could go much higher — to $51M, but they are the only ones who are that optimistic. The team at Universal have stood alone before in their predictions and it has panned out, and I’ll gladly eat crow if I’m wrong. (‘hey, Mom, let’s get high and go see Neighbors.’ Could happen.) It all comes down to Sunday’s percentage hold (or drop), depending on your general disposition.

Nikki Rocco, head of distribution at Universal gave credit all around this morning to the filmmakers and the studio’s “incredible team. The stars aligned for us this weekend on the release date.” Sure did, and let’s face it, the studio has a helluva production, marketing and distribution team led by the very well-respected Rocco. And the movie delivers. Neighbor‘s Friday numbers trounced The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in its sophomore weekend as the Sony/Marvel franchise is looking to gross on the bottom end of the estimate $36.1M to $36.4M all in for a 61% drop. Umpf. It is hovering around $147M. Right now … and I say ‘right now’ because of the lizard stomping into theaters next weekend … it will likely make $225M to $235M all in domestically. Not great, but having opened last Sunday in China, the hot spot just had its first true 3-day weekend and as of this morning, the total gross internationally is up to $403M. ASM2 is now at $550M to date ww. It’ll likely come to profitability.

The Other Woman is expected to come in at $9.2M for the weekend to push its cume to $61.7M in its third week of release and should have a pretty good Sunday for its distrib, Fox, as should Sony’s Heaven is For Real which is still in the Top Five after four weeks in release and will take in (just as predicted last night) $6.4M to $6.5M for a total cume of $74.7M. Well done, Mr. Wallace. The other two openers, Mom’s Night Out and Clarius Entertainment’s very cute animated pic Legends of Oz: Dorothy Returns, should also hold a bit better today because of the holiday but even today’s numbers won’t be able to help these pics from the box office abyss … expect a gross of $3.8M and $3.78M, respectively. Clarius should be very proud as their film received an A CinemaScore. Sorry, Moms … the faith-based crowd made their choice and it is Heaven. (Also, Disney did nationwide sneaks for its Million Dollar Arm in 416 theaters last night, which bows next weekend). Happy Mother’s Day! Here’s the chart:

1). Neighbors (UNI), 3,279 theaters / $19.5M Fri. / $17.8M Sat. (-9%) / $11.5M Sun. (-35%) / 3-day cume: $48.6M to $49M (Uni says $51M) / Wk 1

2). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (SONY) 4,324 theaters (0) / $10.1M Fri. / $15.7M Sat. (+55%)/ $10.2M Sun. (-35%) / 3-day cume: $36M to $37M+ (-61%) / Total cume: $147M / Wk 2

3). The Other Woman (FOX), 3,306 theaters (+68) / $2.8M Fri. / $3.6M Sat. (+30%) / $2.7M Sun. (-25%) / 3-day cume: $9.2M (-35%) / Total cume: $61.8M / Wk 3

4). Heaven Is For Real (SONY), 3,048 theaters (+118) / $2.4M Fri. / $2.7M Sat. (+65%) / $2.1M Sun. (-20%) / 3-day cume: $6.4M to $6.5M (-25%) (Sony says $7M) / Total cume: $74.7M / Wk 4

5). Captain America: The Winter Soldier (DIS), 2,701 theaters (-478) / $1.48M Fri. / $2.5M Sat. (+71%) / $1.6M Sun. / 3-day cume: $5.6M (-27%) / Total cume: $245M / Wk 6

6). Rio 2 (FOX), 2,973 theaters (-341) / $1.1M Fri. / $2.2M Sat. (+92%) / $1.7M Sun. (-20%) / 3-day cume: $5M (-35%) / Total cume: $113.1M / Wk 5

7). Moms’ Night Out (SONY), 1,044 theaters / $1.2M Fri. / $1.38M Sat. (+12%) / $1.18M Sun. (-15%) / 3-day cume: $3.8M (Sony says $4.2M) / Wk 1

8). Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return (FREE), 2,525 theaters / $980K Fri. / $1.5M Sat. (+61%) / $1.2M Sun. / 3-day cume: $3.78M /Wk 1

9/10). Brick Mansions (REL), 2,647 theaters (0) / $475K Fri. / $630K Sat. (+35%) / $473K Sun. (-25%) / 3-day cume: $1.57M (-57%) / Total cume: $18.4M / Wk 3

Divergent (LGF), 1,639 theaters (-427) / $450K Fri. / $685M Sat. (+52%) / $423K Sun. (-40%) / 3-day cume: $1.56M (-28%) / Total cume: $144.9M / Wk 8

NOTEWORTHY: The Chef (OPRD), 6 theaters / $53K Fri. / $81K Sat. (+53%) / $69K Sun. (-20%) / Per screen average: $34K / 3-day cume: $200K / Wk 1

2nd UPDATE: SATURDAY, 11:05 PM: Neighbors might only be off 5% after the end of day today. If so, it will have earned about $18.3M for the moviegoing day which would push its cume higher. Estimating the Top Five right now: Neighbors with $17.5M to $18M today for a $48.6M to 49M+ … mmmaybe $50M and wouldn’t Universal love that … followed by The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with around $16M so not changing the estimates I did below, between $36M and $37M and off about 61% in its second frame. In third place is Fox’s The Other Woman with $3.5M so not changing the 3-day for that either as it will end up right around $9M for the weekend. Sony’s Heaven is For Real, which I believe is going to fare better than people think it might on Mother’s Day tomorrow, took in $2.5M to $2.7M today so keeping that at $6M+ (maybe $6.4M) when it is all said and done. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

1st UPDATE: SATURDAY, 7:17 AM: After a night of partying, the frat boys are still really high. The Universal comedy smoked Spidey last night by a wide margin — $19.5M vs. $10.1M. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has hit its wall in its second weekend … the revised total domestic cume for the Sony/Marvel franchise will be around $225M to $230M all in as the domestic audience for this one continues to shrink. The first installment ended up at $262M. Still, it is nearing $400M internationally so it will reach that magic number of $755M which means it will make a little profit (maybe 20%). The question remains as to how they are going to maintain this franchise with two more coming … no time to reboot this one. Now … Neighbors: estimating $48.6 to $49M+, depending on today’s percentage decline. And ASM2: $36M to $37M.

And internationally, it’s off to one heck of a start (see Nancy Tartaglione’s report here). Congrats to Neighbor‘s Seth Rogen who starred and is one of the producers and, boy, did Zac Efron need a hit. Other producers are Evan Goldberg and James Weaver and the director is Nick Stoller. The writers making their mother’s proud this weekend are Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien. Well done, too, to Universal’s production and marketing team — simply … the … best. In terms of social media, the metric that says it all is the comedies’ YouTube cume views, which are approaching 25M. According to RelishMix CEO Marc Karzen, “When fans post your marketing materials 8 to 1, you have a good engaged audience, but when you see 12 to 1 like we’re seeing on Neighbors, you know that Universal cracked the code with fans on this movie.” Is Neighbors, this generation’s Animal House? (I know, maybe more soul-foul … isn’t everything these days?). Neighbors grossed 48% more than ASM2 Friday. The frat comedy started out with a $2.5M Thursday late night gross and had very strong matinees on Friday and continued strong throughout the night as Spidey just couldn’t go toe to toe. And with Godzilla coming in next week, ASM2 is going to fall again after taking what looks to be a 60% hit in its second frame this weekend.

The rest of the numbers are very similar to last night’s estimates with Fox’s The Other Woman well-heeled to chase in around $9M for the No. 3 spot and Sony’s Heaven is For Real proving itself over and over again in its fourth weekend out to bring in about $6M for Sony this Mother’s Day holiday. Profitable picture for Sony/TriStar. Rounding out the Top Five will be Captain America: The Winter Soldier which shot the bird down as Rio2 estimates have been downgraded. The other openers? Legends of Oz: Dorothy Returns (FREE) with a sweet A CinemaScore but only expected in at $4.1M and Moms’ Night Out like a light with a too close to call $4.1M as well to fight for the No. 7 spot. The revised chart is here:

1). Neighbors (UNI), 3,279 theaters / $19.5M Fri. / 3-day cume: $48.6M to $49M / Wk 1

2). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (SONY) 4,324 theaters (0) / $10.1M Fri. / 3-day cume: $36M to $37M (-60%) / Total cume: $147.5M / Wk 2

3). The Other Woman (FOX), 3,306 theaters (+68) / $2.8M Fri. / 3-day cume: $8.9M to 9M+ (-36%) / Total cume: $61.5M / Wk 3

4). Heaven Is For Real (SONY), 3,048 theaters (+118) / $2.4M Fri. / 3-day cume: $6M+ (-30%) / Total cume: $74.2M / Wk 4

5). Captain America: The Winter Soldier (DIS), 2,701 theaters (-478) / $1.48M Fri. / 3-day cume: $5.5M (-29%) / Total cume: $245M / Wk 6

6). Rio 2 (FOX), 2,973 theaters (-341) / $1.1M Fri. / 3-day cume: $5.3M (-28%) / Total cume: $112.8M to $113M / Wk 5

7/8). Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return (FREE), 2,525 theaters / $980K Fri. / 3-day cume: $4.1M /Wk 1

Moms’ Night Out (SONY), 1,044 theaters / $1.2M Fri. / 3-day cume: $4.1M / Wk 1

9/10). Divergent (LGF), 1,639 theaters (-427) / $450K Fri. / 3-day cume: $1.6M (-26%) / Total cume: $144.9M / Wk 8

Brick Mansions (REL), 2,647 theaters (0) / $475K Fri. / 3-day cume: $1.6M (-56%) / Total cume: $18.5M / Wk 3

NOTEWORTHY: The Chef (OPRD), 6 theaters / $53K Fri. / Per screen average: $8,833 / 3-day cume: $189K / Wk 1

PREVIOUSLY, FRIDAY, 10:46 P.M.: Universal Pictures’ Neighbors partying frat boys has The Amazing Spider-Man 2 climbing the walls. Neighbors will take the No. 1 spot this weekend — there’s no way around it now as the young superhero got a bit wasted Friday. Neighbors has an estimated Friday haul of around $18.3M to $18.5 to $19.5 and Spidey slid — perhaps down roughly 59% in its second weekend — to bring in about $10M+ Friday. That means around a $47M to $48M+ cume for Neighbors compared to Spidey’s $37M to $38M. Neighbors is coming in with an overall B CinemaScore tonight vs. last week’s B+ for ASM2.

With a heavy percentage decline of Spidey after lackluster mid-week grosses and a big 72% dip from Friday to Friday (includes the $8.7M Thursday late nights), Spidey’s second weekend also recasts doubt about its overall domestic cume and begs the question … how in the world is the studio going to win domestic audiences with two more of these suckers? The good news for Sony is that ASM2 is expected to have a slightly better hold on Sunday than the R-rated Neighbors (the only R-rated movie in the top 10). ASM2 is PG-13. The Seth Rogen, Zach Efron-starring comedy will likely hold steady on Saturday with Spidey having a better hold on Mothers’ Day Sunday … so it really came down to this Friday estimate. Universal is the best one out there now producing and marketing comedies.

Having added about 70 theaters is Fox’s The Other Woman with an easy third place (it’s holding strong, CA) and Sony/TriStar’s Heaven is For Real is still playing also with a solid fourth spot having added over 100 theaters, grossing an estimated $5.8M to $6M for an impressive $74M expected in four weeks out.

Moms’ Night Out is down and out as the faith based crowd seems to prefer Heaven is For Real. It received a B+ CinemaScore but should come in at No. 8, below the other opener the animated family film Legends of Oz: Dorothy Returns, which got an A CinemaScore. Numbers will change in the morning, but expect the positions to remain stoic. Until the morning, jello shots all around.

1). Neighbors (UNI), 3,279 theaters / $18.5M to $19.5M Fri. / 3-day cume: $47M to 48M+ / Wk 1

2). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (SONY) 4,324 theaters (0) / $10.1M Fri. / 3-day cume: $37M to $38M (-59%) / Total cume: $147.8M / Wk 2

3). The Other Woman (FOX), 3,306 theaters (+68) / $2.8M Fri. / 3-day cume: $9M (-37%) / Total cume: $61.5M / Wk 3

4). Heaven Is For Real (SONY), 3,048 theaters (+118) / $2M to $2.2M Fri. / 3-day cume: $5.8M to $6M (-30%) / Total cume: $74M+ / Wk 4

5). Rio 2 (FOX), 2,973 theaters (-341) / $1.2M to $1.4M Fri. / 3-day cume: $5.8M (-25%) / Total cume: $112.8M / Wk 5

6). Captain America: The Winter Soldier (DIS), 2,701 theaters (-478) / $1.4M Fri. / 3-day cume: $5.2M to $5.4M (-32%) / Total cume: $244.8M / Wk 6

7/8). Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return (FREE), 2,525 theaters / $915K Fri. / 3-day cume: $3.9M /Wk 1

Moms’ Night Out (SONY), 1,044 theaters / $1.2M Fri. / 3-day cume: $3.8M to $4M / Wk 1

9). Brick Mansions (REL), 2,647 theaters (0) / $470K Fri. / 3-day cume: $1.6M (-57%) / Total cume: $18.5M / Wk 3

10). Divergent (LGF), 1,639 theaters (-427) / $450K Fri. / 3-day cume: $2M (-27%) / Total cume: $144.6M / Wk 8

NOTEWORTHY: The Chef (OPRD), 6 theaters / $53K Fri. / Per screen average: $8,833 / 3-day cume: $187K / Wk 1
