‘Big Hero 6′ Hugs $605M Global Box Office, Now Disney’s 3rd-Biggest Animated Title
Thrust across the goal line by its strong performance in China, Disney’s Big Hero 6 crossed the $600M mark worldwide. It’s the studio’s fourth 2014 film to reach the milestone, and the 22nd ever. After adding $19.9M globally this frame, the Oscar winner’s total is now $604.8M ($221.3M domestic/$383.5M international). That pushes it past Tangled to become the third-highest-grossing Disney animated release of all time behind all-time animated box-office champ Frozen and The Lion King. The big, mushy ‘bot is still playing in 25 territories in its 20th week on screens.
In its final international debut last week, in China, the huggable pic that’s set in San Fransokyo posted the biggest opening weekend ever for a Disney or Pixar animated release. It bested Frozen‘s start last year, and, in its second Middle Kingdom frame, Hiro and Baymax saw an 18% uptick over the previous two-day session. The FSS take there was $15.9M for a local cume of $40.8M.
BH6 is now the second-biggest Disney or Pixar release ever in China, after less than two weeks. Frozen ultimately made about $48M in the Middle Kingdom and BH6 still has another three weeks to run. The Don Hall and Chris Williams-helmed movie about the special bond between an inflatable robot and a teenage prodigy will face off with Disney’s own live-action (and more female-skewing) Cinderella beginning March 13 in China.
As with Frozen, Big Hero 6‘s biggest overseas market remains Japan with $75.1M. This weekend, the film was the top animated title there for the 10th frame in a row, as well as the No. 2 Western release behind American Sniper. China is now the second-biggest offshore play followed by the UK ($28.5M), Russia ($20.3M) and Korea ($20.1M).
