Bernie Sanders Says Donald Trump Opponents Need to ‘Fight Back’

Bernie Sanders advised those who object to Donald Trump’s political views to “fight back” during an appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on Monday.

The former presidential candidate reminded viewers that Trump won the election but lost the popular vote, saying, “the vast majority of the American people are on our side. Trump’s views are a minority.”

“What you do now is get heavily involved in the political process,” he said. “When millions of people stand up and fight back, we will not be denied.”

Sanders’ comments came after days of protests in cities across the country by those who were upset by the outcome of last week’s presidential election. Large, mostly peaceful gatherings were reported in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Boston, Seattle, Portland and Atlanta.

The Vermont senator also had advice for the Democratic party following their surprise loss: “The Democrats cannot continue to be run — the Democratic party — by what I call the liberal elite,” he said.

“The party has got to transform itself to be a party which — first of all, opens the door. That is the party that feels the pain of working class people, of middle class, of low income people, of young people … That brings people into the party,” Sanders continued.

Elsewhere in the episode, Colbert mocked the president-elect’s lengthy “60 Minutes” interview from Sunday, comparing Trump’s relationship to Russia’s Vladimir Putin to the story of the Trojan Horse from Greek mythology.
