News station broadcasts touching tribute to meteorologist Jessica Starr, who died by suicide

Fox 2 in Detroit aired a video tribute to meteorologist Jessica Starr on Thursday night, just a day after reporting that the 35-year-old wife and mother had taken her own life.

“You watched from your living rooms and kitchen, time cut short in a life that gave so much light to this world,” the narrator says in the video.

The tribute included an interview with Starr’s high school basketball coach, Robert Schopf, who called her a “hometown hero,” and says he will continue to tell her story as a learning lesson for his students that they can achieve great things.

“Jessica made it, she was living her dream,” Schopf said. “On TV, a well-known figure in the community, a kid who really did well. And we were all very proud of her.”

Starr had recently taken time off from work as she recovered from laser eye surgery, and later posted on Facebook that she had returned to work too soon and needed more time to recover during what she called “a challenging time.”

Her colleagues are admittedly still coping with the reality of Starr’s passing, and Fox 2 anchor Roop Raj added that the video tribute only “scratches the surface of how special she was” to them.

“A story 35 years short that begged for a different ending,” the video concluded. “So we stop, in deep sadness, and give thanks that No. 33 made it to 2 — Fox 2. A shining star, a light that will never fade in the eyes of the town she loved and called home.”
