The Newport Show brings antiquarians, history buffs and folks who spend money on old stuff

NEWPORT, Rhode Island — Among those of a certain social set, age is valued particularly if the “old” in question is attached to money, bloodlines or the family dog.

Oh, and furnishings.

The 16th annual Newport Show offered all of the above — except for the dogs, of course, whose presence was pretty much limited to canvas.

The weekend-long event opened on July 28 with a preview party to benefit the Historical Society of Newport County and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County.

John Peixinho and Meg Braff were sponsor chairs of the preview party, which took place at St. George's School's newly renovated ice hockey rink. Minus the ice, of course, although with the weekend's blistering temperatures, the prospect of a frozen venue probably wouldn't keep anybody away.

The evening included cocktails; passed hors d'oeuvres; and first crack at vendors booths offering art, furnishings, jewelry, objets, and even vintage Chanel and Hermes bags.

The Newport Show show traditionally features an exhibit curated especially for the event. This year's featured exhibit, titled “Access Newport,” combined historic objects and contemporary paintings and was a collaboration of The Newport Historical Society and Newport Curates.

More than 500 people attended the preview party, which kicked off a three-day event attended by more than 1,000.

Anne Hamilton of Palm Beach, Newport and Philadelphia was chairman of The Newport Show, which she co-founded. Diana Bittel was show manager.

Proceeds from the Newport Show benefit the Newport Historical Society and The Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County.
