NewJeans: Bay Area celebrates new K-pop music with pop-up event

(KRON) — Popular K-pop group NewJeans is back with new music and an upcoming album. “How Sweet” and “Bubble Gum” just dropped on May 24, and both songs already have millions of views on YouTube.

In celebration of the drop, San Francisco K-pop store Saranghello is hosting a pop-up event on Saturday, May 25. They teamed up with Foam Tea House for a NewJeans-themed day, including a cup sleeve designed in honor of the K-pop group.

The group is comprised of five members: Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein. Their next mini album, “Supernatural,” will be released on June 21st.

For that album, they teamed up with Takashi Murakami on the song “Right Now.”  Murakami, a well-known Japanese artist known for fashion and animation, designed the group in his style, but with a combination of the Power Puff Girls. He also designed merchandise that will accompany their new album’s release.

Earlier this year, NewJeans won the Group of the Year Award at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music event. The group is part of the fourth generation of K-pop, and since its debut in 2022, it has taken the world by storm.

According to Billboard’s website, five of their songs have made it onto the Hot 100 Chart. Their song “Super Shy” makes it the highest, peaking at 48 on the chart and with over 185 million views on YouTube. “Super Shy” was also commonly used on TikTok, as the group made a fun dance to the song.

Their first and only American performance was at Lollapalooza in Chicago in 2023. They are the first K-pop girl group to perform on that stage. They were also the first K-pop female group to perform for the League of Legends World Championships Finals in 2023.
