New YouTube Streaming Service Takes on Network & Cable TV

YouTube has fired the first shots in its war on television! The streaming service has announced YouTube TV — for $35 a month, subscribers can watch all four major networks — ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC — plus about 35 cable channels. They even throw in YouTube Red for free, if that’s what you’re into…

This new service has the potential to take a sizeable chunk out of the cable market as the Wall Street Journal recently reported that YouTube has surpassed one billion hours of viewership per day. TV is at about 1.25 billion hours per day and the number is declining. With this new streaming service, their viewerships could equal out soon.

Another interesting figure to consider comes from the U.S. Energy Information Agency who found that people have less TVs on average than they did in 2009, and the amount of households with no TV has nearly doubled since 2009.

But don’t blow up your set just yet — YouTube TV will offer channels like USA, FX, The CW, and MSNBC. Missing from their package is anything Viacom or Turner, so no Comedy Central, MTV, CNN, or TBS. Plus, AMC is out; sorry, Walking Dead-heads.
