New York Congressman Contemplates Suicide In Face Of Possible GOP Nomination for Ted Cruz

Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is in the midst of a heated presidential primary season. While he has proven a popular choice in some states, when it comes to New York — well, he’s gotten a frosty reception. Yet there might be no New Yorker more unwelcoming of Cruz than his fellow Republican, Congressman Peter King. On Morning Joe, King said he’d commit suicide if Cruz wins the GOP nomination. “Well, first of all, in case anybody gets confused, I’m not endorsing Ted Cruz,” King said. “I hate Ted Cruz. And I think I’ll take cyanide if he got the nomination.”

King informed the Morning Joe crowd that he voted for Ohio Gov. John Kasich in New York’s primary. This isn’t the first time King has said some, well, negative things about Cruz. Let’s go back 2013, when he got angry about Cruz’s role in the government shutdown. “If you come up with a strategy that’s going to shut down the government of the United States and you have no way of winning, you’re either a fraud or you’re totally incompetent, so he can have his choice as to what he is,” he frostily told Piers Morgan. At other times, he said, “He’s false leader; he’s led people down a false path here,” and “Ted Cruz has decided to be the center of his own universe, to live in his own world.”

Let’s leave you with maybe the best summation of King’s thoughts on Cruz, which include yet another fun reference to suicide. It came during a conversation with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, when Cruz announced his campaign in 2015. “He’s shown no qualifications, no legislation passed, no leadership, and he has no real experience,” King argued. “So to me, he’s just a guy with a big mouth and no results.” “Would you support him if he were the GOP nominee?” Blitzer asked. “I just hope that day never comes,” replied King. “I’ll jump off that bridge when we come to it.”
