New York City Subway Singer Wows ‘America's Got Talent’
America’s Got Talent got a surprise audition performance from a subway singer named Mike Yung, who has been singing in the subways of New York City for 37 years. He explained his start as a subway singer, “I got a job working for the Parks Department cleaning the beach at Coney Island. An old friend of mine, he was playing in the subway. He said, ‘Go with me in the subway one day. Three hours you’ll make $50.’ After the second day, I quit my job. I’m still singing, so I’m still living.”
Yung, 57, belted an emotional version of “Unchained Melody” that brought the audience to its feet.
Although Mel B was a holdout for bringing Yung onto the season, Simon Cowell voted him through. Cowell praised the singer by saying, “I was listening to something that Mel was playing during the break, which was a piece of auto-tuned junk. And this is the real deal. This is 40 years of actually going out there. It just makes me remember, you know, what great singers can be. And this is what this is all about.”
