New this week: Moby, the Breeders, Joan Baez, and more

Moby: Everything Was Beautiful, and Nothing Hurt (Mute). Moby is reacting to the current state of the world by adopting a dour, doom-ridden outlook on his 15th studio album. His hopeless attitude, however, is contrasted by a lot of almost angelic touches — soft, lush production; even a gospel choir — resulting in an interesting clash of aesthetics.

The Breeders: All Nerve (4AD). This is the band’s first studio album since 2008, and it’s the first effort that members Kim and Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs, and Jim Macpherson have worked on together since 1993’s Last Splash. The result is a dynamic, briskly paced collection that holds up to their ’90s legacy sound.

Joan Baez: Whistle Down the Wind (Bobolink/Razor & Tie). Baez has announced that 2018 will be her last year of formal extended touring, and this release also marks her first album in 10 years — making the album one of particular note on several fronts. Joe Henry steps in as producer for the set.

Tech N9ne: Planet (Strange Music). This is the 11th studio album from the iconic Kansas City MC, and as usual, he is pushing the envelope making his strange music in his own inimitable way. Guests Machine Gun Kelly, Krizz Kaliko, Snow Tha Product, and Kingo Iso help things along.

Andrew W.K.: You’re Not Alone (Bee & El/RED/Sony Music). Andrew W.K. is not known for subtle gestures, and he lives up to this reputation with his first album in 12 years. The set is bold, larger than life, and bombastic; listen a little closer beyond the power and his talent as a songwriter becomes evident.

Fanny Walked the Earth: Fanny Walked the Earth (Blue Elan). This record marks the first from the groundbreaking female rockers — who paved the way for women musicians such as the Runaways, the Bangles, and the Go-Go’s — since 1974. Originally titled Fanny, the group has reinvented itself as Fanny Walks the Earth and features original members June Millington, Jean Millington Adamian, and Brie Howard Darling.

Tracey Thorn: Record (Merge). This marks the first solo album of entirely original material in seven years from the Everything But the Girl singer. She’s recruited some interesting guests to round out the feminist-oriented set: Corinne Bailey Rae, Shura, Warpaint’s Jenny Lee Lindberg, and Stella Mozgawa.

Celtic Thunder: Celtic Thunder X (Legacy Recordings). The beloved ensemble’s latest special was filmed in Dublin on Oct. 30, 2017, at the Helix Theatre and features some new songs for fans to explore and enjoy.
