New 'Top Gear' Host Chris Evans: 'I'm Paid Too Much'

It’s not often that television personalities are candid about their worth. Chris Evans, of the British variety, was blunt in discussing his compensation for working on the BBC program Top Gear. “It’s a well-known fact, it’s not exactly breaking news, that people who do what I do for a living, compared to people in the real world, get paid too much money.” Evans was selected for Top Gear after BBC opted not to renew the contract of former host Jeremy Clarkson, which led to the the exodus of co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May.

Evans elaborated on the fact that he is overpaid for a project that many people would willingly do for free. “We’ve got jobs that people would kill for, and we get to do things that people would pay to do if they could afford it,” said Evans, “And sometimes those things aren’t even available to buy.” With the new Top Gear premiering May 30, Evans isn’t exactly setting a great tone for the rebooted series. “Most of us work part-time anyway, so just pay us less,” stated Evans. “That’s what I would do. It’s not rocket science.”
