The COVID-19-era awards season is finally kicking into gear and so far, the love's being spread around.

David Fincher's "Citizen Kane" origin story "Mank" leads the pack with six Golden Globe nominations, announced Wednesday. It's the first major batch of honorees in a race toward the April 25 Academy Awards, which were delayed by the pandemic.

"Mank" took home nominations for top film drama, director (Fincher), drama actor (Gary Oldman), supporting actress (Amanda Seyfried), score and screenplay.

Aaron Sorkin's courtroom drama "The Trial of the Chicago 7" scored five nominations total while four apiece went to Chloe Zhao's road movie "Nomadland," the Anthony Hopkins drama "The Father" and Carey Mulligan's revenge thriller "Promising Young Woman." All four will duel with "Mank" for best motion picture drama.

The best comedy/musical field will include Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway sensation "Hamilton," Sia's "Music," Ryan Murphy's inclusive "The Prom," Sacha Baron Cohen's raucous sequel "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" and the time-loop romance "Palm Spring."

The late Chadwick Boseman, a favorite for "Ma Rainey," is in the drama actor race with Oldman, Riz Ahmed ("Sound of Metal"), Anthony Hopkins ("The Father"), and Tahar Rahim ("The Mauritanian"). Meanwhile, in the comedy/musical actor slate, Miranda faces off against Cohen ("Borat"), Andy Samberg ("Palm Springs"), Dev Patel ("The Personal History of David Copperfield") and James Corden ("The Prom").

Diversity was a big winner in the Globes best director nominations, with three women - including two filmmakers of color - snagging honors: Zhao, Emerald Fennell ("Promising Young Woman") and Regina King ("One Night in Miami").

The 78th annual Golden Globes will air live on Feb. 28 on NBC (8 EST/5 PST) and will for the first time be held bicoastally, with Tina Fey live in New York and Amy Poehler in Beverly Hills, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association said Tuesday.
