EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has picked up UK rights to Kaur, a short film that debuted last year on British streamers ITVX and BritBox.

The film is set to drop on Netflix in the second window on May 3 following the deal for film, which is from Parvinder Shergill and Juggy Sohal. Shergill stars opposite Stephen Uppal (Hollyoaks).

Kaur bills itself as “the first film in history” to follow the story of a British Sikh woman (Shergill), who decides to wear a turban for the first time against her father’s wishes. Her mother (Nina Wadia), is supportive of the decision, but struggles with the tensions it causes.

A full-length feature film version is in development, Shergill told Deadline, with her Pinder Productions and Sohal’s Flip The Script Network attached, the same production set-up as the short. Shergill, who along with filmmaking is an NHS doctor, will again play the lead role, Avani, while Sohal is casting for further roles. Like the short, it will address female empowerment and how people embrace their identities.

The short is produced in association with Raise Creatives, with Netflix UK now attached for the second window.

The news comes in a busy week for Netflix UK, which later today is expected to unveil several new shows at its latest See What’s Next showcase in London.

As we revealed yesterday, expected among the productions will be The Choice, a thriller series starring Suranne Jones from The Mothership writer-director Matt Charman set in the upper echelons of of the British political sphere.
