Netflix Takes English-Speaking Rights To Oliver Hirschbiegel’s ‘The Same Sky’ – Mipcom

Ahead of its world premiere at Mipcom tonight, German drama The Same Sky has closed several offshore deals, including to Netflix which has taken rights in English-speaking territories. Beta Film is handling the six-part series directed by Oscar nominated helmer Olivier Hirschbiegel (Downfall).

Made by UFA Fiction and Beta Film for ZDF, the family drama is created and written by Paula Milne (The Politician’s Husband). It’s set in Cold War Berlin and centers on the relationship between an East German agent (Woman In Gold‘s Tom Schilling) and his target in the West (The Bridge‘s Sofia Helin), the woman he must seduce for the sake of his country. The series recreates the uniquely charged atmosphere in the Cold War city by portraying the fates of two families, one on each side of the wall, and interweaving East German dissidents and informers with West German hustlers and agents, as well as American and British diplomats. Friederike Becht (The Reader) also stars.

The series has further sold to Rai in Italy, SFR and France 3 in France, Belgium’s VRT and Iceland’s RUV. Previous deals were sealed with the major Scandinavian broadcasters.

This is a hot time for German drama with UFA Fiction’s Deutschland 83 recently picked up for a second season, notably by Sundance TV in the U.S.
