Another royal scandal is getting the Netflix treatment.

After “The Crown” concluded in 2023, the streaming platform is releasing film “Scoop” about the infamous 2019 BBC “Newsnight” interview between anchor Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew. “The Crown” alum Gillian Anderson portrays Maitlis in the movie based on the former “Newsnight” editor Sam McAlister’s book “Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interview.” Rufus Sewell plays Prince Andrew, the Duke of York at Buckingham Palace.

“Scoop” centers on the behind-the-scenes flurry to land an interview with Prince Andrew after the royal was listed in court papers as part of a U.S. civil case against convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. During the “Newsnight” broadcast, Prince Andrew addressed the allegations made by Epstein and his victims. Prince Andrew alleged that he only knew Epstein through socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, who was later convicted on sex-trafficking charges in December 2021. Maxwell’s story was previously adapted into a Starz docuseries, among other true crime shows.

“Scoop” also stars Keeley Hawes, Romola Garai, and Billie Piper, who plays editor McAlister. The film is directed by Philip Martin and written by “Your Honor” scribe Peter Moffatt.

Per the official Netflix synopsis, the film will “provide behind-the-scenes insight into the jaw-dropping, forensic showdown with the Prince. It will take viewers inside the story with the women who would stop at nothing to get it.”

“Scoop” is produced by Hilary Salmon and Radford Neville for The Lighthouse Film & TV. Author McAlister serves as an executive producer alongside Sanjay Singhal for Voltage TV.

Lead actress Anderson has taken on more real-life roles recently, with the actress formerly starring on “The Crown” as Margaret Thatcher and also playing Eleanor Roosevelt in Showtime’s anthology series “The First Lady.” Anderson recently revisited her iconic “The X-Files” role amid talks of a reboot led by “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler.

Anderson said in 2022 of playing fictional FBI Agent Dana Scully, “I don’t think it was as clear-cut in my mind as being, ‘Oh, this is a feminist character.’ I think that it was more of just, ‘This is a woman that I haven’t seen before on television, and she’s so unique.'”

“Scoop” premieres April 5 on Netflix. Check out the teaser below.
