Netflix’s Movie Catalog Outshines Rivals, But Demand for Originals Is Dropping | Charts

Netflix holds a leading position when it comes to movie catalogs. Parrot Analytics Content Panorama, which provides supply-side information about streaming platform catalogs in multiple markets, shows that Netflix had a larger movie catalog than all the other SVOD platforms, closely followed by Amazon Prime Video only (not considering Prime Videos add-on channels). There’s a significant drop to Max, which has the third-largest catalog.

Unlike other platforms, such as Max and Paramount+, which are linked to a big movie studio and end up being the streaming home of their movies, Netflix relies on licensing and producing movies to have movie content available. The platform pioneered the concept of streaming-released movies in 2015 with movies like “Beast of No Nation,” with the rest of the industry following.

As of the first quarter of 2024, Netflix-released movies represented one-quarter of the platform’s movie catalog, marking a notable increase from 20% in the third quarter of 2022. This growth occurred mostly throughout 2023, a year that saw a peak number of movies released on Netflix, including the popular “Heart of Stone” and “Mother”.

Despite the efforts, titles released on the platform are responsible for less than 20.0% of the total demand for movies on the platform, a share that has been declining for the last two quarters. This discrepancy between supply and demand share can be better understood by looking at the dwindling presence of Netflix-released films among the top-demand movies on the platform. Only one Netflix-released movie made it to the Top 50 movies available on the platform in the first quarter of 2024, “We Can Be Heroes,” a drop from Q3 2023, when eight movies ranked. Twelve movies ranked in Q4 2022.

Netflix was the first platform to release movies straight to streaming and there have been standout successes among Netflix’s originals. For example, “The Power Of The Dog” and “Enola Holmes” topped on-platform demand ranking in the quarters following their releases. But these films serve more as an addition rather than the core of its vast catalog, with most of the audience looking in there for licensed blockbusters that have been theatrically released.
