Production Company Bombed In Brazil
It's being reported that several molotov cocktails were thrown at the Brazilian film company Porta dos Fundos on Christmas Eve.
Members of the company, which produced a controversial Netflix movie that shows Jesus Christ as gay, were not injured.
The New York Times reports that later, three men came forward in a video to say that they were the attackers, and that they were looking for "justice" for “all Brazilians against the blasphemous, bourgeois and anti-patriotic attitude” of the filmmakers of The First Temptation Of Christ.
A New Stage In the Protests
The man who plays Jesus in the movie, Gregorio Duvivier, says the Molotov cocktail attack was a new twist in the controversy.
“We have endured all types of verbal assaults, online, even from members of Congress. But this is the first time we’ve faced violence of this nature, an attack that could have killed people.”
Porta Dos Fundos Condemned the Act
Variety writes that Porta dos Fundos released a statement saying:
“Porta dos Fundos condemns any act of violence. We expect those responsible for the attacks to be found and punished. However, our priority right now is the safety of the entire team that works with us.
We will speak again once we have more details. Meanwhile, Porta dos Fundos would like to reinforce our commitment to good humor and declare that we will move on stronger, more united, inspired, and confident that Brazil will survive this storm of hatred, and love will prevail along with freedom of speech."
Conservatives Denounce 'First Temptation Of Christ'
Online petitions began to circulate on Change.org after the movie appeared on Dec. 3. Christian conservatives have denounced the movie, including a Catholic bishop from Tyler, Texas, who tweeted: “Just cancelled Netflix....hardly have time to watch it anyway but blasphemers don’t deserve a penny of support!”
Satirical Film a 'Blasphemy'
Strickland had more to say about the movie as he retweeted Graham Allen, podcast host of "Dear America."
“Respect is the last thing they are thinking about, every Christian should denounce this film, it is blasphemy against the Son of God who suffered & died even for all who deny that He is Lord of the Universe. His prayer for them.... 'Father forgive them they know not what they do.’ ”
It's Only a Movie
The First Temptation Of Christ is a satirical story of Jesus and his friend Orlando, who always seems to be hinting that there's more to the friendship between him and Jesus.
Jericho Amisola tweeted a reminder that the movie was a work of parody, saying "It is a satire of society to the structures of the church which breed oppression."
