Netflix 'Cheer' stars Gabi Butler, Lexi Brumback cheer on Bella Hadid at Brandon Maxwell NYFW show

NEW YORK — Brandon Maxwell's New York Fashion Week show had its own cheering section — literally.

Cheerleaders Gabi Butler and Lexi Brumback, the stars of Netflix's breakout docuseries "Cheer," hooted and hollered as models strutted down the runway at Maxwell's Fall/Winter 2020 show Saturday night.

Butler, who was already known as a "cheer-lebrity" in the sporting world, and Brumback have become breakout stars in their own right since the series about their lives at small-town Texas junior college Navarro College, which has become nationally known for its award-winning cheerleading program.

The "Cheer" stars weren't the only celebrities in attendance. Rapper Saweetie sat in the front row, as did supermodel and Maxwell's "Project Runway" co-host Karlie Kloss.

Their peppy presence at the fashion show — which was hosted in the Hall of North American Mammals at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City — made sense, since the runway production carried on Maxwell's legacy of paying homage to his home state of Texas.

The show opened with the song "6 Inch" from Houston-bred songstress Beyoncé and closed with country track "Girl Goin' Nowhere" by Ashley McBryde, with music in between serving as the soundtrack to the fashion.

Supermodel Bella Hadid wore multiple looks down the runway, which also saw slinky dresses, Western-inspired boots, big gowns, leather jackets and belt bags.

Maxwell crafted clothes and an event that continued his tradition of mixing elegant yet wearable clothes with an unexpected location, country music, fun refreshments (alcohol in sippy cups, cheeseburgers and fries were served prior to the show) and a celebration of his design team, who come out onto the runway with the designer at the end of each show.

The final look in the show, a stunning red chiffon gown, was "expressly made by Brandon for the Museum's upcoming exhibition 'The Nature of Color,'" according to American Museum of Natural History President Ellen V. Futter in the show notes.

"This major exhibition will explore the role and power of color in the natural world, in human cultures, and in our personal lives," Futter wrote.
