Netflix has joined as a producer of the stage play Patriots, marking the media giant’s first Broadway producing credit.

The play, which is written by Peter Morgan, creator of the Netflix series, The Crown, is set in 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, and follows a Russian billionaire, Boris Berezovsky, trying to recruit a then-unknown Vladimir Putin to run for president. But Putin’s rise to power soon threatens Berezovsky’s own interests, putting the two at odds.

A spokesperson for Netflix confirmed that the company is developing a screen adaptation of the play, as had been reported in the New York Times.

While this is Netflix’s first Broadway credit, the streamer is also a producer on the currently running London production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which is a prequel to the Netflix series.

Patriots is directed by three-time Olivier Award winner and Artistic Director of the Almeida Rupert Goold and scheduled to open April 22, 2024 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. Previews begin April 1 and the play is set for a limited 12-week run.

The play comes to Broadway from London, where it played the Almeida Theatre, and after a sold out 12-week run in the West End at the Noël Coward Theatre. Netflix was not a producer on the London production.

The 18-person cast includes Tony and Emmy Award nominee Michael Stuhlbarg as Boris Berezovsk, original London cast member Will Keen as Vladimir Putin and original London cast member Luke Thallon as Russian oligarch and politician Roman Abramovich.

Sonia Friedman Productions, which is also behind Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Leopoldstadt and the recent revival of Funny Girl, is also a lead producer. The show is capitalized for up to $8 million, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
