Nelly’s Rape Case Dropped by Prosecutors After Accuser Declined to Assist Investigation: Report

Authorities have declined to file sexual assault charges against Nelly, following his accuser’s decision not to assist authorities with the case, according to multiple reports.

The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office made the decision to drop the case after the woman who accused Nelly of sexually assaulting her on his tour bus in Washington told investigators she did not want to testify in court or help with the investigation, according to TMZ.

According to a statement from the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office obtained by E! News, although “police responded to and investigated a sexual assault allegation” involving Nelly, “within days of her initial report to police, the complainant, through her attorney, informed investigators from the Auburn police department that she did not wish to assist in prosecution or the investigation” of the rapper.

It had previously been reported that the woman wanted the case against Nelly dropped. In a letter obtained by The Blast, her lawyer, Karen Koehler, who identified her client as a 21-year-old college student, said her client “never wanted notoriety” from her claims.

The letter says that the woman “cannot handle” the “horrible things” that were said since she accused the hip-hop star of the alleged rape, and that she “wants this to end.” It is also mentioned that the detectives handling of the case didn’t ensure the woman’s privacy.

Following the rapper’s release from police custody in October, a rep for Nelly told PEOPLE via a statement from his lawyer that the woman’s claims were “a completely fabricated allegation” and that they are confident he would not be charged.

“Our initial investigation clearly establishes this allegation is devoid of credibility and is motivated by greed and vindictiveness,” Nelly’s attorney Scott Rosenblum said in a statement. “I am confident, once this scurrilous accusation is thoroughly investigated, there will be no charges. Nelly is prepared to address and pursue all legal avenues to redress any damage caused by this clearly false allegation.”

A rep for Nelly did not immediately return PEOPLE’s request for comment.
