Neil Patrick Harris’s 5-Year-Old Daughter Wants to Dress Like a ‘Goth Prostitute’ for Halloween — and You Can Guess How He Feels About That

Neil Patrick Harris knows that the adorable group Halloween costumes his family wears each year can’t last forever, but he’s not quite ready to let his kids pick their own — and it’s with good reason.

While Heidi Klum has owned Halloween for the last decade, the How I Met Your Mother alum, 43, has given her healthy competition over the last few years with his ridiculously cute themed costumes featuring his twin son and daughter, Gideon and Harper, and husband, David Burtka. They’ve done Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz, Frankenstein, and Star Wars, to name a few, and nailed each one. But the kids, who recently started kindergarten, are growing out of the family dress-up idea.

“They’re starting to have more of an opinion, which is a little bit annoying,” NPH quipped on Wednesday’s Late Night With Seth Meyers.

Harris said that if the kids could dress up like anything they wanted, Harper would be a Monster High character. To the uninitiated, they are kind of terrifying, modern-day, goth Barbies, which Harris equates with, well, ladies of the night.

“It’s these girls with long legs and short shorts, vampire teeth, and boobs. That’s what Harper wants to be for Halloween,” Harris said. “I don’t want her to be some whore in kindergarten. I don’t think anyone will get [that it is] Monster High. They’ll just think she’s a goth prostitute.”

For the record, he’s not into his son Gideon’s costume idea, but for different reasons — mostly mobility.

“Gideon wants to be R2-D2,” which Harris said was “equally not good. You can’t walk. You can’t sit in a car. You can’t go through doors. How do you pee? [It’s like you] lock him into this little can and say, ‘Good luck, kid.’”

So it looks like there will be two costume changes for the Harris-Burtka kids this year. One of their choosing and then hopefully a family one. He said he’s currently doing “Jedi mind tricks” on them to get them to agree to something he and Burtka like too.

It may take some work. At just 5 years old, Harper and Gideon are two cool kids with opinions about what they wear. Just look at their first day of school photo:
