Neil deGrasse Tyson Talks ‘Star Wars’ Fans Hating On Him

Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson was on Conan Monday, and he talked about the mess he got himself into when he started picking at certain elements of the Star Wars universe. Specifically, it his comment about BB-8 that got fans flustered — he tweeted, “In @StarWars #TheForceAwakens, BB-8, a smooth rolling metal spherical ball, would have skidded uncontrollably on sand.”

Did people actually get upset? Yes. Just take one look at the avalanche of replies that tweet got. Tyson also stoke the flames by bringing up Star Trek. “I got asked who would win in a contest” between the Starship Enterprise and the Millennium Falcon, Tyson told host Conan O’Brien. “And I said the Starship Enterprise would wipe its a** with the Millennium Falcon. It’s very simple.”

Star Wars fans are prickly people,” Tyson said. “I mean, you can’t say anything bad. No, no. You can’t say anything correct if it somehow gets interpreted as saying something bad. … I wonder if I should continue to tweet about movies.”
