After an offseason of hype, Tanner Lee’s first season as the starter at Nebraska hasn’t gone very well.

Sure, the Tulane transfer has shown flashes of NFL potential. He has the prototypical size and arm strength, but he sure seems to throw the ball to the other team a lot.

Lee entered Saturday with more interceptions, nine, than anybody in the country. In the first quarter at home against No. 9 Wisconsin, he added to that total.

Lee looked for running back Devine Ozigbo out of the backfield and delivered the ball with a lot of velocity on it. Before Ozigbo could fully get his head turned toward Lee, the ball deflected off his helmet and into the arms of Wisconsin linebacker Chris Orr. Orr then took it the distance — 78 yards — for a touchdown.

Some responsibility goes to Ozigbo to expect the ball and get his head turned around to make a play, but that interception mainly falls on Lee, who delivered the ball much too hard where Ozigbo really didn’t have much of a chance to catch it.

Of Lee’s 10 interceptions so far this year, four have been returned for touchdowns.

Lee finished Saturday night’s game 16-of-32 for 262 yards, one touchdown and the first quarter interception above. The Huskers tied the game at 17 early in the third before Wisconsin scored 21 straight and won, 38-17.

The Badgers are 5-0 (2-0 Big Ten); Nebraska is 3-3 (2-1).
