NBC Explains How ‘Emergence’ Ended Up at ABC: ‘Couldn’t Find a Home’ for Allison Tolman Drama

NBC executives explained how their Allison Tolman drama pilot, “Emergence,” ended up being ordered to series ABC.

“We had an abundance of choice,” Paul Telegdy, co-chairman, NBC Entertainment, told TheWrap during a conference call with reporters on Sunday. “‘Emergence’ is a great show, but one that we couldn’t find a home for at NBC. We’re delighted it’s found a future at ABC.”

“Emergence” was surprisingly picked up to series by ABC on Saturday, joining the network’s other new series “The Baker and The Beauty,” “For Life,” “Mixed-ish,” “United We Fall” and the Untitled Cobie Smulders Project. The drama, which comes from ABC Studios, stars Tolman, Alexa Swinton, Ashley Aufderheide, Robert Bailey Jr., Zabryna Guevara, Donald Faison and Clancy Brown. It is from Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, with Paul McGuigan on board as director.

ABC will announce its fall schedule Tuesday morning.

Here is the logline for the show: A character-driven genre thriller that centers around a police chief who takes in a young child that she finds near the site of a mysterious accident who has no memory of what has happened. The investigation draws her into a conspiracy larger than she ever imagined, and the child’s identity is at the center of it all.

NBC still ended up ordering eight shows for next season — Dick Wolf’s “Law & Order” spinoff, “Hate Crimes” will not air next season but the network is still committed to it — including “Bluff City Law,” “Council of Dads,” “Indebted,” “The Kenan Show,” “Lincoln,” “Perfect Harmony,” “Sunnyside” and “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.”
