Nationwide cookie franchise coming to Gainesville; Plant-based protein bar in Newberry

A cookie chain with more than 800 locations across all 50 states is coming to Gainesville.

The Shops at Butler announced via Facebook this week that Crumbl Cookies will soon open a bakery in the giant shopping hub off Archer Road. It will be located in Butler Plaza near Nothing Bundt Cakes and Jeremiah's Italian Ice.

Utah-based Crumbl Cookies has exploded in popularity since first being introduced by cousins Jason McGown and Sawyer Hemsley in 2017. The bakery has more than 60 locations currently in operation in Florida, primarily along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, and in the Orlando area.

The announcement created significant buzz on social media.

"This is SO exiting!! Can't wait!" wrote one Facebook user. "OMG this is the one place I have been waiting for!!!" wrote another.

Customers will have to visit often to get a taste of the sweet shop's rotating menu of more than 200 flavors, which are inspired by cakes, candies and other desserts.

The Crumbl Cookies in DeLand currently has for sale its signature Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chunk, Lemon Cupcake, Strawberry Ice Cream Bar, Coconut White Chip, Peanut Butter Cookies & Cream, Sugar Shark and the Original with M&M candies.

Cookies come in the company's signature pink box and can be ordered in increments of one ($4.50), four ($14.63), six ($22.50) and 12 ($38.25).

GainZville Hub

Plant-based protein bar Gainzville Hub, 21 SW Second St., Gainesville, announced Monday plans for a Newberry location.

The Hub at Newberry, as it will be called, has yet to reveal the eatery's exact location or an opening date.

The menu features a variety of protein-rich options, including shakes, teas, acai bowls, churros and waffles. Another menu highlight is a protein iced coffee made with a mocha butterscotch blend that sells for $8.

Its signature shakes each sell for $10, and flavors include Fruity Pebbles, Banana Boat, Nutella Love, Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Orange Passion.

Sonny's BBQ competition

The Sonny's BBQ on Waldo Road, 2700 N. Waldo Road, Gainesville, will host a First Responders BBQ Competition on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Members of the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, Gainesville Police Department and High Springs Fire Department will put their flavors to the test as the cook up chicken, ribs and a mystery meat to see who takes home the pitmaster title.

The pubic is invited to attend, and can enjoy prizes, free samples and take part in a donation drive for Blessings in a Backpack. Food will be available for purchase, including a $14.99 ribs and chicken dinner created by former Florida Gators football player and Sonny's Pitmaster Shannon Snell.
