Phoebe Bridgers and The National’s Matt Berninger have a new band — sort of. The indie favorites appear in Zach Galifianakis’ Between Two Ferns: The Movie as Phoebe Bridgers and The Spiders from Bars, debuting a new song called “Walking on a String”.
Produced by Bridgers, Tony Berg, and Ethan Gruska, the track was written by Berninger; his wife, Carin Besser; and musician Mike Brewer specifically for the Netflix special. Brewer also plays as a member of The Spiders from Bars, along with The Walkmen’s Walter Martin and Matt Barrick. The group performs “Walking on a String” in a bar scene right in the middle of Between Two Ferns, underscoring a touching moment between Galifianakis and his crew.
Though it’s part of a movie about a sarcastic, silly internet talkshow, “Walking on a String” is actually wonderfully sweet and sincere. Netflix’s subtitles describe it as “melancholy country-folk,” and it features Bridgers and Berninger in a warm duet. Though the pair have played together live numerous times, this marks their first truly new collaborative effort.
The song will get an official release on October 17th via Dead Oceans, but you can watch the Bridgers and The Spiders from Bars play it around the 42:30 mark on Netflix.
