Aug. 1 is National Girlfriend Day, a day for women to celebrate their special bond of friendship. And what better way to honor the day than with a look at the five best life lessons about friendship learned from some of television’s most famous girlfriends?
Kicking off the countdown is UPN’s Girlfriends. The series focused on the trials and tribulations of friends Toni, Maya, Lynn, and Joan. One of the most important lessons the series taught women was that your friends are always more important than any guy. HBO brought us the millennial-focused series Girls. The show’s central characters — Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, and Shoshanna — were known for being brutally honest with each other, but you really need that from your friends.
For six seasons, Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha explored Manhattan’s dating scene on HBO’s Sex and the City and showed us the value of investing in your best friendships.
Besties Leslie Knope and Ann Perkins were the epitome of best friends on NBC’s Parks and Recreation. Although some might think Leslie’s desire to celebrate unique anniversaries like breakfast day, double date day, and zoo day was a little overzealous, their friendship ultimately showed us it’s important to celebrate life’s milestones, big or small.
Finally, any list of TV girlfriends has to include the ladies of The Golden Girls. There wasn’t any problem that Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche couldn’t solve over a slice of cheesecake.
