National Georgraphic Grabs Tribeca Documentary ‘From the Ashes’

National Geographic Documentary Films has acquired Michael Bonfiglio’s “From the Ashes,” the new documentary about the coal industry that will premiere later this month as part of the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival.

A timely look at the coal and mining industries that comes as clean power regulations stand poised to be repealed under the Trump administration, “From the Ashes” is produced by RadicalMedia (“Hamilton’s America,” “What Happened, Miss Simone?”) in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies, founded by Michael R. Bloomberg to fund awareness of the environment and push for clean energy.

“From the Ashes” will premiere April 26 at Tribeca, where Bloomberg will introduce the film at a special screening. The title gets a limited theatrical release over the summer and then the will air on the National Geographic network in 171 countries later this year.

Directed by Bonfiglio (“Doc & Darryl” with Judd Apatow, “Oprah’s Master Class”), the movie looks at the economic, environmental and public health stakes in what is sometimes called the “war on coal.” Sidney Beaumont produces, with Jon Kamen, Joe Berlinger and Justin Wilkes exec producing for RadicalMedia and Katherine Oliver exec producing for Bloomberg Philanthropies. Tim Pastore is president of original programming and production for National Georgraphic.
