The star of a biopic gets a bit too involved in the subject’s provocative love life in the trailer for director Todd Haynes’ May December thriller, which arrives on Netflix this December.

The premise: Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, marrieds Gracie and Joe (played by Academy Award winner Julianne Moore and Riverdale alum Charles Melton) buckle under the pressure when an actress, Elizabeth (Academy Award winner Natalie Portman), arrives to do research for a film about their past.

As seen in the trailer above, a very diligent Elizabeth comes to take perhaps too passionate an interest in what makes Gracie and Joe’s once-illicit romance tick.

Penned by Samy Burch off a story by Burch and Alex Mechanik, the thriller — a Palme d’Or nominee at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and due to open the 61st New York Film Festival this weekend — will hit select theaters on Nov. 17 before being streaming on Netflix Friday, Dec. 1.
