Her surprise appearance on the red carpet left many fans confused. You may remember that Portman appeared as scientist Jane Foster, Thor's love interest, in Marvel's Thor (2011) and Thor: The Dark World (2013). But in a 2016 interview with The Wall Street Journal, Portman said that while the movies were "a great thing to be a part of," she was "done" with Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Thor: Ragnarok (2017), it was revealed that her character and Thor had a falling out-and, poof, Jane Foster was never heard from again.

People wondered what Portman's presence at the Avengers: Endgame premiere could mean: a return to MCU? A cameo in the new movie? Finally, some justice for Jane?

"It's been so exciting to be part of this Marvel Universe and see all of these incredible new characters be revealed to audiences every year," Portman, who is not credited in Avengers: Endgame, told Marvel Entertainment at the premiere, "and of course to have women in science be front and center is incredible to spread that culture throughout the world."

Here are some of the best Twitter reactions (and speculations) about Portman's surprise appearance.

Avengers: Endgame will be in theaters on April 26.
