Nashville Alt-Pop Artist Whissell Premieres Her New Song ‘Old Souls, Young Bodies’: Exclusive

Nashville based alt-pop artist Whissell longs for the ways of old-school love in her new track “Old Souls, Young Bodies,” which she shares exclusively to Billboard before it hits iTunes on Friday.

“I have this weird connection to the past,” says Whissell in a statement. “Some of my favorite stories growing up were about how my grandparents met and courted in the 40's. Love in that era seemed so genuine and special. I always felt out of place in this modern romance scene. I didn’t want to swipe left — or right for that matter.”

The song starts off with more of a dark pop feel before transitioning into Whissell’s gritty, sultry voice where she attempts to make sense of where the people who hold onto the values of those old school loves are. (“Is there one for everyone?/ Oh are there many/ I think there’s one for everyone, but I can’t find any.”)

“When I was writing ‘Old Souls, Young Bodies,’ we came up with this idea of lovers during WWII, writing letters to each other, promising to wait forever. I think that’s what old souls crave — that depth and that realness that can’t be faked or fabricated in just one or two dates.”

Whissell, born Lauren Whistle, released her debut single, “Get Free,” last year which resulted in her music being featured on a slew of major networks including HBO, ABC and NBC.

Whissell has partnered with songwriters Nate Company (Carly Rae Jepsen, Tove Lo) and Dan Nigro (Sky Ferreira, Twin Shadow) for her debut album Old Souls, Young Bodies, which is set for release Jan. 27.
