Ridley Scott’s epic new film “Napoleon,” arguably one of the year’s last remaining mysteries, received a new trailer on Wednesday, just about one month before its theatrical debut.

The Apple film, which arrives in theaters via Sony, has not premiered at any of the fall festivals thus far, nor has it been screened widely to members of the press and industry.

But the new trailer is certainly promising, with star Joaquin Phoenix affecting a deadpan detachment as the famed Napoleon amid scenes of typically explosive Scott action that will look familiar to fans of “Gladiator,” “Kingdom of Heaven,” and “Exodus: Gods and Kings.”

Here’s the logline from Sony and Apple:

‘Napoleon’ is a spectacle-filled action epic that details the checkered rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, played by Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix. Against a stunning backdrop of large-scale filmmaking orchestrated by legendary director Ridley Scott, the film captures Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine, showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed.

Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby stars as Josephine in the film.

Scott and Phoenix memorably first connected on “Gladiator,” which landed Phoenix his first-ever Oscar nomination. He later won Best Actor at the 2020 Oscars for “Joker.” Scott said recently that it was the Todd Phillips blockbuster that made him feel Phoenix would be perfect to play Napoleon.

“I was blown away by his outrageous film ‘Joker.’ I didn’t like the way it celebrated violence but Joaquin was remarkable. I thought he’d be an amazing asset to ‘Napoleon,’ [not only creatively] but also in a commercial sense,” Scott told Deadline. “There were only two actors I had in mind for the role. I won’t mention the other one.”

“Napoleon” will enter an awards race that is not short on epics from some of Hollywood’s most-acclaimed filmmakers – including “Oppenheimer” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

“Napoleon” will debut on November 22 in theaters before arriving on Apple TV+ at a later date. The trailer is below (and yes that is “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath accompanying the action).
