Nancy Pelosi on Republican opposition to impeachment: 'I cannot be held up by that'

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) joined The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Thursday just hours after a historic vote in the House formalized how the impeachment inquiry of Donald Trump will be conducted going forward. Not a single Republican voted in favor of the resolution, and Pelosi had some strong words for those standing in the way of what she sees as their constitutional duty.

“You would have thought that the Republicans would all vote for it because it gave them more rights than we ever received in any of the other impeachment proceedings,” Pelosi said, later adding, “But if they’re not gonna honor their oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, I cannot be held up by that whether it’s in the House or in the Senate.”

Republicans have relentlessly attacked the process since the impeachment inquiry began, claiming they weren’t getting a fair shake, even though the depositions so far have been conducted under guidelines set by Republicans in 2015. Pelosi explained what was in the resolution, and one would think it would ease the minds of Republicans who have chided the process thus far.

“What happened today was a continuation of our inquiry that we have, but to set forth the rules of procedure for how we go forward now,” Pelosi said, “spelling out the president’s rights, due process for him, how the majority and the minority will have equal time to question witnesses and the rest. It’s about fairness.”

Pelosi also said public hearings will be starting soon, another thing that should appease Republicans. But, even though public hearings will soon be underway, Republicans will continue to get equal time for questioning, and Trump and his lawyers will be involved, many Republicans continue to rip the process, and Pelosi believes she knows why.

“It’s interesting because they’ve been talking process, process, process,” Pelosi said, “because they know they can’t really go near the substance issue.”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
