Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer Say They’ve Reached Deal With Trump on Young Immigrants

WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said that they have made a deal with President Trump on legislation to address young undocumented immigrants, and that it does not include funding to build a border wall.

“We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides,” Schumer and Pelosi said in a statement.

The border wall was one of Trump’s signature campaign promises, and its exclusion almost immediately generated criticism from the right. Breibart.com labeled him “Amnesty Don,” with the headline, “Report: Trump Caves on DACA.” Steve Bannon, Trump’s former chief strategist, is the site’s executive chairman.

Schumer and Pelosi met with Trump for dinner at the White House on Wednesday.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders later tweeted that “while DACA and border security were both discussed, excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to.”

Trump last week announced an end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, but said that it would be phased out over a period of six months so Congress would have enough time to pass legislation. The program allowed children of undocumented immigrants to stay in the United States, under a set of conditions.

In a series of late evening tweets, Trump himself was not focused on the apparent deal with the Democrats, but his opponent in 2016, Hillary Clinton, who has been on a publicity tour her book “What Happened.” He wrote, “Crooked Hillary blames everybody (and every thing) but herself for her election loss. She lost the debates and lost her direction!”

He also wrote, “The ‘deplorables’ came back to haunt Hillary. They expressed their feelings loud and clear. She spent big money but, in the end, had no game!”
