'Naked and Afraid' contestant sustains deep machete cut and requires stitches
Medical personnel had to be called in during an emergency on Sunday’s Naked and Afraid: Foreign Exchange. Two French contestants took on the challenge of surviving in the Colombian jungle for 21 days. And while they succeeded, one of them left with a few new stitches.
A contestant named Steven brought a machete for his adventure in the brutal environment, which is full of deadly snakes, caymans, jaguars and insects. The machete came in particularly useful when the pair had to hunt one of South America’s most venomous snakes, bothrops, which is commonly known as the fer-de-lance.
Steven had great success hacking the heads off multiple fer-de-lances, but he also suffered the misfortune of hacking himself. While cutting bamboo he accidentally cut his hand just below the wrist.
Though the gash was not large, it was quite deep. In order to close the wound and stave off infection a medic had to stitch it closed.
Considering other contestants in the show’s history have contracted deadly diseases like malaria, Steven considered himself lucky. “Luckily, it doesn't hurt too bad,” said Steven. “These things happen. We just have to accept it.”
Naked and Afraid: Foreign Exchange airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on Discovery.
