'Naked and Afraid' contestant rushed to hospital with life-threatening hypothermia

Naked and Afraid traveled to the rainy Velebit mountains of Croatia. Survivalists Samantha and Adam attempted to last 21 days in the cool and damp mountain forests, but doing so almost proved to be deadly.

Samantha, who goes by Sam, developed hypothermia during a long rainstorm on a particularly cold night. Sam did not want to share a shelter or body warmth with her partner, Adam.

By the time the competitors asked for a medic to step in, Sam had developed stage two hypothermia. She could not feel her extremities, and the medic was worried her organs were shutting down.

With Adam’s help, Sam was carried to an ambulance and rushed to the hospital.

Fortunately, doctors treated her in time to avoid any permanent damage. After a few days in the hospital, the mother of four said, “My kids will see, you know, Mom did it. My body couldn’t handle the last part. I was really looking forward to high-fiving Adam and saying, ‘We did it.’ I thank you for being there and watching out for me.”

Naked and Afraid airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on Discovery.
