A New York police sergeant fatally shot his wife and two sons before turning the gun on himself in an apparent murder-suicide.

Police in Clarkstown, N.Y., say Watson Morgan, 49, who worked for the Bronxville Police Department, failed to show up for a shift on Dec. 30, which prompted a wellness check. Upon searching the family’s home, police found Morgan, his wife, Ornela, 42, and two sons, aged 10 and 12, dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

Morgan joined the Bronxville police in 2007, having previously worked for the New York City Police Department, the Village of Bronxville said in a press release. He became a sergeant in 2016.

A memorial was held for Ornela and her two sons at the school Friday, LoHud.com reported. Students and teachers at the school released balloons into the air in her honor, according to the report.

"When you were in her presence, it was clear that she was genuinely there with you,” fellow teacher Megan Dodge said at the memorial.
