Police in New Hampshire say a man dressed in a Grinch costume was hospitalized after his car crashed into a local business Christmas night.

The Exeter Police Department said a Honda CRV, driven by a 31-year-old man, was traveling south on Newfields Road just before 6 p.m. local time on Monday when the vehicle went off the roadway.

The car damaged a mailbox, a sign and several lights in the yard in front of The Word Barn, according to police. The business said a honey stand was also damaged in the crash.

But the biggest shock came when the driver exited the vehicle. “Imagine our surprise when we raced outside to assist and found...the Grinch!?!” The Word Barn wrote in a post on its Facebook page.

Photos of the scene show the man — dressed head-to-toe as the Grinch — sitting in the front seat of the CRV shortly after the crash.

Police said the Exeter man in the Grinch costume “became distracted near a curve in the road” prior to the crash.

"This was certainly a unique situation," Police Chief Stephan Poulin said, per the department’s Facebook post.

The CRV, which was towed from the scene, sustained “significant” front-end damage as well as a smashed windshield and a broken rear driver’s side window.

“We're amazed and so very glad no one was hurt,” The Word Barn wrote on Facebook.
