A North Carolina father faces murder charges after allegedly shaking his newborn son to death while visiting him in the hospital, arrest warrants show.

Noah Benjamin Bliss, 22, of Angier, was arrested on Oct. 13 and charged with first-degree murder and intentional child abuse with serious bodily injury, according to court records obtained by PEOPLE.

Bliss is accused of assaulting and killing his 3-week-old son, Gunner Bliss, on Oct. 6 at the WakeMed Health and Hospitals campus in Raleigh, court records show.

According to an arrest warrant issued for Bliss on the murder charge, on Oct. 6, he “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did of malice aforethought kill and murder G.B."

Court documents reveal little else about the incident, but the newborn’s mother, Savannah Bliss, told local outlet WRAL about her son’s shocking death.

"I want justice for my son," Savannah told WRAL.

On Sept. 15, Savannah gave birth to twins Gunner and Madelyn, who were born prematurely at 34 weeks, she told the outlet.

On Oct. 6, Savannah said she visited Madelyn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, while Noah watched Gunner and their 1-year-old child in a room at WakeMed’s Heart Center Inn on the hospital’s top floor, where the family was staying while the baby received neonatal care.

While she was gone, Gunner suffered a brain bleed and swelling from head trauma he sustained, hospital staff told Savannah.

He had no external injuries or broken bones, but was deprived of oxygen because of the head trauma, Savannah was told by staff, WRAL reports.

Savannah told WRAL that nurses said that the injuries Gunner sustained “indicate he was shaken by his father.”

On Monday, Gunner was taken off life support, leaving Savannah devastated.

"I trusted my husband to watch Gunner while I was taking care of his sister in the ICU. He was sweetest boy with most beautiful blue eyes ... he was the best baby [and] for him to be taken so soon is so wrong."

Noah is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court in November.

His public defender was unable to be reached for comment.
