Must like wiener dogs, be mostly stable and know cheeses: Indy sub shop uses humor to hire

A laundry list of requirements is taped on the door of Greiner's Sub Shop on Shelby Street.

"Yes, we are hiring. Must be able to" ...

  • Know what lunch meat is.

  • Stay off Facebook at work.

  • Not have a current warrant.

  • Know how to stop, drop and roll.

  • Know your cheeses.

  • Be mostly stable.

  • Like wiener dogs.

  • Know what an elbow noodle is.

  • Know what an elbow is.

  • Be nice to all mankind, because Greiner's welcomes all.

Just to name a few.

Why wiener dogs when it's a sub shop? Well, the owner has three: Owen, Truman and Buttercup.

Greiner's owner Lisa Moyer said she started making signs like this at the beginning of the pandemic. She said incorporating humor helped give her a competitive edge over the many other businesses needing employees.

And it worked. While Moyer's signs are simple, satirical and silly, she said they have attracted new employees.

"If somebody catches the sense of humor and that's their end goal in life, then, as long as they can do half the stuff (on the poster) they'll be a good employee," Moyer said. "People that get this poster, those are our people."

You can find Greiner's Sub Shop on the city's south side at 2126 Shelby Street.
