Oklahoma City theater fans should get the proverbial popcorn ready, as celebrated musical adaptations of the movies "Moulin Rouge!," "Beetlejuice" and "Some Like It Hot" are coming to town.

OKC Broadway's newly announced 2024-25 season at Civic Center Music Hall will start just after Labor Day with a two-week run of the 10-time Tony Award-winning title "Moulin Rouge! The Musical."

The upcoming subscription season for the local presenter of nationally touring Broadway shows also will include new titles like the Michael Jackson stage biopic "MJ The Musical," a new adaptation of "Peter Pan" from an acclaimed Native American playwright, and the Shakespearean jukebox musical "& Juliet," with a book penned by a Primetime Emmy-winning writer from the hit television series "Schitt's Creek."

In addition to the six-show subscription lineup, OKC Broadway — a presentation of The Nederlander Organization and Civic Center Foundation — announced Thursday that it will bring "Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical" to Oklahoma City for the holidays as an added season special. 

"We are nearing the end of a 2023-24 Season Series that has been nothing short of record-breaking," said Elizabeth Gray, general manager of OKC Broadway and executive director of the Civic Center Foundation, in a statement.

"This season is all about hilarious fun, moving musicals, and Tony Award-winning epic productions."

Upcoming OKC Broadway season will follow 'Chicago' and 'Mamma Mia!'

Before the 2024-25 season gets underway, OKC Broadway will close its 2023-24 season with two blockbuster musicals at the Civic Center.

Offered as an add-on special to the 2023-24 subscription season, "Chicago" comes to Oklahoma City on its 25th anniversary tour for the first time since 2014. John Kander and Fred Ebb's six-time Tony-winning tale of murder, greed and all that jazz plays April 9-14.

OKC Broadway's 2023-2024 season will close with the enduring hit "Mamma Mia!," which uses the earworms of Swedish pop group ABBA to tell the tale of a daughter trying to learn the identity of her dad in the days leading up to her wedding on an idyllic Greek island. Theatergoers will be grooving to "Dancing Queen," "S.O.S.," the title track and more during the show's May 21-26 OKC run.

The national tour of "Mamma Mia!" previously visited Oklahoma City in 2012 and 2016, and Lyric Theatre staged the sunny jukebox musical in 2018.

Here are the shows coming up on OKC Broadway's newly announced 2024-25 season at the Civic Center:

'Moulin Rouge! The Musical'

When: Sept. 3-15.

The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann's 2001 Oscar-winning movie earned 10 Tonys, including best musical, in 2021.

Directed by Tony winner Alex Timbers, the tale of a poor writer who falls for a lovely cabaret singer coveted by a jealous aristocrat comes to the OKC stage in a remixed song-and-dance extravaganza that features a new slate of pop hits.

The lavish musical boasts a book by Tony winner John Logan, music supervision, orchestrations, and arrangements by Tony winner Justin Levine and choreography by Tony winner Sonya Tayeh.

The show is recommended for ages 12 and older.

'MJ The Musical'

When: Oct. 1-6.

The musical biopic makes its Oklahoma premiere in fall. Centered around the making of Michael Jackson's 1992 "Dangerous World Tour," the show won four Tony Awards in 2022.

Created by Tony-winning director and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, "MJ The Musical" showcases not only Jackson's singular moves and sound but also the iconic entertainer's creative mind and spirit.

Recommended for ages 8 and older.

'Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical'

When: Nov. 6-10.

The record-setting Broadway yuletide sensation will be an added season special for the OKC Broadway 2024-25 subscription season. The show features the hit songs “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas” from the original 1966 animated special. Max the Dog narrates as the scheming Grinch plots to steal Christmas away from the holiday-loving Whos.

Recommended for ages 5 and older.

'Beetlejuice The Musical'

When: Nov. 19-24.

The ghost with the most is heading to OKC. Nominated for eight Tony Awards, the musical adaptation of the Tim Burton's Oscar-winning 1988 movie centers on Lydia Deetz, an unusual teenager whose life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes.

The musical will bow in OKC just two months after Burton's long-awaited screen sequel, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," opens in movie theaters Sept. 6.

Recommended for ages 13 and older due to mature language.

'Peter Pan'

When: March 18-23, 2025

The high-flying musical has been delighting audiences for almost 70 years and comes back to OKC in a new adaptation by Larissa FastHorse, the first known Native American woman playwright to produce a Broadway show.

Directed by Emmy winner Lonny Price and choreographed by Lorin Latarro, the musical follows Peter Pan and his mischievous sidekick, Tinker Bell, as they visit the bedroom of the Darling children and, with a sprinkle of fairy dust and some happy thoughts, take them on a magical journey. The show includes the songs “I’m Flying,” “I Gotta Crow,” “I Won’t Grow Up” and “Neverland.”

The show is recommended for all ages.

'Some Like It Hot'

When: April 1-6., 2025.

Set in Chicago when Prohibition has everyone thirsty for a little excitement, "Some Like It Hot" tells the rollicking story of two musicians forced to flee the Windy City after witnessing a mob hit. With gangsters hot on their heels, they disguise themselves as women and take jobs as the newest members of the swingingest big band ever to cross the country.

Based on legendary writer-director Billy Wilder's Oscar-winning 1959 movie, the new musical features a book by Tony winner Matthew López and television writer and personality Amber Ruffin.

"Some Like It Hot" was named best musical by the Drama League, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle. It was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won four, plus it received the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album in February.

On Broadway, University of Oklahoma alumnus Adrianna Hicks originated the role of Sugar, played by Marilyn Monroe in the movie. Hicks is returning to OKC this summer to play the lead role in Lyric Theatre’s "Mary Poppins" June 25-30 at the Civic Center.

Recommended for ages 12 and older.

'& Juliet'

When: April 29-May 4, 2025

The Shakespearean jukebox musical flips the script on one of the most enduring love stories ever told, asking what would happen next if Juliet didn’t end it all over Romeo. In the new musical, Juliet is whisked away on a fabulous journey as she ditches her famous ending for a fresh beginning and a second chance at life and love her way.

With a book written by “Schitt’s Creek" writer-producer David West Read, the show tells Juliet's reimagined story through a playlist of iconic pop anthems like "Since U Been Gone‚" "Roar," "Baby One More Time," "Larger Than Life‚" "That’s The Way It Is“ and "Can't Stop the Feeling!" from Max Martin, billed as the songwriter/producer behind more No. 1 hits than any other artist this century.

Recommended for ages 8 and older.

How can you get OKC Broadway tickets for 2024-25?

Most OKC Broadway performances run Tuesday through Sunday nights, with Saturday and Sunday matinees, at the Civic Center, 201 N Walker.
