Music, dance, visual arts, theater and more: The 2023 fall and winter arts calendar

This year is the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and multiple shows this season pair holiday fun and the opportunity to celebrate the landmark anniversary that has become a pillar of modern American culture.

Later this month, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Live in Concert” will present a screening of the Academy Award-winning animated film with live musicians, turntables and a DJ scratching records on stage. The movie’s hip-hop-based score, composed by Emmy winner Daniel Pemberton, is full of innovative music along with songs from Post Malone, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and it supports the film’s themes of resilience and heroism. “The Hip Hop Nutcracker,” the popular re-imagined ballet blending hip-hop and Tchaikovsky, returns in December.

The season has so many possibilities, however, from holiday ballets to comedy shows to Broadway to symphonies. (Hint: This is the season for Sergei Rachmaninoff fans.) The list isn’t inclusive of every event, but a good representation of what Hampton Roads has to look forward to through the end of February. (Yes, there will be a spring and summer arts guide.)

Several events include a TBA mention, which means details such as ticket prices or locations haven’t been announced. The guide lists standard ticket prices for adults, but almost all venues offer discounts for the military, older adults and children. Events and dates are also subject to change so check before you go.

Enjoy!
