Murrysville area: 'Polar Express' reading, used book sale, walk-a-thon, more

Oct. 27—Marathon swimmer will give library presentation

Franklin Regional graduate and "Oceans Seven" marathon swimmer Darren Miller will be the featured speaker at a Nov. 15 presentation at the Murrysville municipal building.

Miller, a Delmont native, swam seven oceans spanning five continents during his first attempts to benefit the Children's Hospital Foundation. His presentation will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Murrysville council chamber at 4100 Sardis Road. There is no cost to attend.

Recreation officials will be collecting donations for the nonprofit Sportsmen and Landowners Association of Murrysville, to help fund repairs to handicap access for fishing in Sloan Creek.

Choir to present 'A Patriotic Thanksgiving'

The Murrysville Cantata Choir will present its fifth annual worship concert, "A Patriotic Thanksgiving," at 4 p.m. Nov. 13 at First Presbyterian Church in Murrysville.

Drive-thru dinner at Union Presbyterian

Union Presbyterian Church in Washington Township will host a drive-thru dinner from 4-6 p.m., Nov. 10 at the church, 656 Route 380.

Meals are available by suggested donation (no specific amount, and those who cannot afford to donate can still get a meal) and include rigatoni with meat sauce, salad, rolls and dessert. Those picking up a meal can drive around to the back of the church.

AAUW prepares for book sale

The American Association of University Women in Murrysville will host its annual book sale Nov. 10-12 at the Murrysville Community Library, and are also seeking volunteers to help with aspects of the event.

Volunteers are needed for the following times:

—Setup, 3-5 p.m., Nov. 9

—Sale volunteers, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1-5 p.m. Nov. 10-11, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1-3 p.m. Nov. 12

—Teardown, 3-5 p.m., Nov. 12

—Volunteers are needed to take leftover books to Half Price Books in Monroeville after the sale ends.

'Polar Express' reading, visit from St. Nicholas

The Murrysville Recreation Department will host a reading of "The Polar Express" children's book and a visit with St. Nicholas in December.

Sessions will take place at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 and 10 a.m. Dec. 10, at the Murrysville Community Center, 3091 Carson Ave. The cost is $20.

The event will include hot chocolate and cookies, and children will receive their own train ticket.

Walk-a-thon to benefit Meals on Wheels

A Nov. 5 walk-a-thon at Newhouse Park in Delmont will benefit Delmont Meals on Wheels.

It will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the park, off Stotler Road in Delmont. Walkers will solicit sponsorship and donations, and light refreshments will be served, with 100% of the event proceeds going to Delmont Meals on Wheels.

Residents can also drop off donations for Meals on Wheels through Nov. 5 at the library, 75 School St. Donations for the group can be mailed to Delmont Meals on Wheels, 301 East Pittsburgh St., Delmont, Pa., 15626.

Rotary recognizes Volunteer of the Year

The Murrysville-Export Rotary Club recognized its 2022 Volunteer of the Year, Murrysville Meals on Wheels director Lynn Staab.

Staab has been an active volunteer in the community since 1987 with a number of different organizations, and has chaired the Murrysville Meals on Wheels group since 1995, managing more than 200 volunteers and delivering meals to roughly 50 residents. Staab oversees operations, public relations, fundraising and scheduling for Meals on Wheels.

International Women meeting in Monroeville

The International Women group will meet at 9:30 a.m., Friday at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church, 2310 Haymaker Road in Monroeville.

All women in the community, whether American or foreign-born, are invited to attend. The featured speaker will be Barbara Burstin, author of "Sophie: The Incomparable Mayor Masloff."
