'Murphy Brown' shows it's never too late to confront perpetrators of sexual assault

Inspired by #MeToo, Thursday’s episode of Murphy Brown revealed that Murphy (Candice Bergen) was sexually assaulted by a professor in college when she was 19. And Murphy, empowered by the current social and political environment, confronted her attacker.

Murphy bravely recounts to her former professor the night of the incident. She explains how he lured her to his office, pressured her to drink, and then sexually assaulted her. Murphy told him, “You pinned me down right there on that couch. I pushed you off, and I got the hell out of here.”

Similar to many headlines in today’s news, Murphy’s professor denied the accusations. He actually accused her of seducing him. And while he never acknowledged or apologized for his transgressions, Murphy felt a sense of relief because she had finally faced the person who hurt her so many years before.

Murphy Brown airs Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. on CBS.
