The gruesome murder of Carol Stuart in 1989 made it to the national news, prompting people to question their own security. HBO Max‘s latest docuseries, Murder In Boston: Roots, Rampage & Reckoning, digs deeper into the case and uncovers several details to the viewers.

On October 23, 1989, an assailant allegedly murdered Carol Stuart while she and her husband, Charles Stuart, were traveling through the Roxbury neighborhood. According to her husband, a young adult African-American gunman forced his way into their car and carried out the murder. When the investigation was launched, police started questioning and arresting Black men in the case, causing a stir in the community.

However, things went downhill for Charles when the authorities found his statement to be false. Police finally obtained the name of the killer when Charles’ brother, Matthew, went to the police and confessed on January 3, 1990. In his confession, Matthew Stuart admitted that Charles killed Carol Stuart. Before the police could arrest him for the gruesome murder, Charles Stuart died on January 4 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Charles Stuart’s death: How did he die?

As mentioned above, Charles’ brother, Matthew, went to the police and admitted that his brother killed Carol Stuart. He also told the authorities that Charles Stuart put a bullet in his wife’s head. He also shot himself so that it looks like someone else attacked the couple. Soon after his brother’s confession, Charles met his lawyer and left his place. Few hours later, authorities discovered Charles’ abandoned car on the Tobin Bridge in Chelsea. According to The Washington Post, the culprit jumped off the bridge to his death, and the police found his body in the Mystic River the next day.

Charles had made an extensive plan on how to make his wife’s murder scene look like an accident. However, Matthew confessed that Charles Stuart had planned an insurance fraud scam and even involved him in the scheme. As per the plan, Matthew was supposed to rob the couple of Carol’s jewelry. However, when Matthew arrived to the scene, Charles Stuart had already shot Carol and himself.

After his death, police garnered much information about how Charles had expressed his desire to kill his wife. Moreover, it was also revealed that Charles Stuart had an extra-marital affair.
