Musicians can’t get enough of Noah Kahan. This weekend, at Austin City Limits, Mumford and Sons recruited the fast-rising singer and songwriter to assist in the live debut of their latest song, “Maybe,” which hasn’t yet been released. The song, when it does arrive, will mark the first official release from the group since 2020.

“Maybe I’m empty/Maybe I’m cold/Maybe I’m halfway out the door/But this wasn’t it/This wasn’t all I was asking for,” the band sang, with Kahan adding on: “Maybe I’m spoiled/Maybe I’m getting old/Maybe I feasted too much before/But this wasn’t it/This wasn’t all I was asking for.”

The song searches for balance without sacrificing accountability, pleading: “Will you stop your screaming/Just for a second?/I really don’t care what you think/But I care how you feel/And I wanna be held/In your arms.”

Last year, Marcus Mumford started teasing the potential release of another Mumford & Sons album. It would mark their first full-length since 2018’s Delta. “The next thing really is to get in the room with the boys in the band and start playing each other the songs we’ve written,” Mumford told Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist. “I’ve got a bunch that are kind of ready to go. And then we’ll make a record, and tour it, and get to do what we love.”

It’s pretty similar to what Kahan himself has been up to lately. Earlier this year, he released an extended edition of his breakthrough album Stick Season, entitled Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever). The record has spawned collaborations with Luke Bryan, Kacey Musgraves, Post Malone, and more. Most recently, Olivia Rodrigo covered the title track “Stick Season” during her appearance on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge.

“There are a few songs I have specific ideas for people for. But, you know, we’re all artists and I don’t want to be like, “Get in here and do this fucking song!” That’s not fair to this person’s sense of creativity and inspiration,” Kahan recently told Rolling Stone about his collaborative approach, teasing a few more additions on the horizon. “But there are definitely some I have specific ideas for. I had a very specific idea for “You’re Gonna Go Far,” and I’m working on making it happen. But it’s not easy. I’m just grateful that people are saying yes at all.”
