Mumbai Film Fest To Honor Luca Guadagnino & Mani Ratnam

The Mumbai Film Festival will honor Luca Guadagnino and Indian filmmaker Mani Ratnam at the upcoming fest, which runs from October 27 to November 5. The former will win the Excellence in Cinema Award (International) while the latter is handed the South Asian version of the same award. Both directors will attend the festival to receive their gongs and conduct masterclasses. The festival will also screen Ratnam’s recent Tamil-language historical dramas, Ponniyin Selvan: Part One & Two, and Luca Guadagnino’s Golden Globe-nominated I Am Love. Previous receipients of Mumbai Film Festival’s Excellence in Cinema Awards include Darren Aronofsky, Sharmila Tagore, Fernando Meirelles, Jia Zhangke and Chen Kaige.

BBC Buys Denmark’s ‘Prisoner’ Starring ‘The Killing’s Sofie Gråbøl

The BBC has acquired Danish drama Prisoner starring The Killing’s Sofie Gråbøl. The series for national broadcaster DR revolves around the lives of four prison officers – Henrik (David Dencik), Miriam (Gråbøl), Sammi (Youssef Wayne Hvidtfeldt) and Gert (Charlotte Fich) – whose personal challenges intertwine with the complexities of their workplace, a prison plagued by bad press, hierarchy issues, and a drug trade. BBC Head of Programme Acquisitions Sue Deeks described Prisoner as an “authentic, complex and compelling portrait of the harsh realities of life in prison.” The BBC has been on a bit of a buying spree of late, picking up the likes of AMC’s Interview with the Vampire and Australian thriller Scrublands.

Shirley Henderson Feted By BAFTA Scotland

Harry Potter and Filth star Shirley Henderson has been awarded the BAFTA Scotland Outstanding Contribution Award alongside Oscar-winning 1917 sound engineer Stuart Wilson. Henderson has worked on iconic British movies including Bridget Jones’ Diary, 24 Hour Party People and Trainspotting, along with playing Moaning Myrtle in the Harry Potter movies. Wilson, meanwhile, is a seven-time Oscar nominee who has worked on Star Wars and James Bond. The pair will be given their awards at the BAFTA Scotland ceremony in Glasgow on November 19. “Shirley Henderson and Stuart Wilson are both highly respected in their fields, with remarkable careers that have seen them appear in the credits of some of the biggest franchises of all time,” said BAFTA Scotland Director Jude MacLaverty.

‘The Promised Land’ Dominates Mallorca Ceremony

Nikolaj Arcel’s The Promised Land starring Mads Mikkelsen scooped the big prizes at the Mallorca International Film Festival’s closing gala last night. Arcel’s Danish historical drama dominated, taking home Best International Film, Best Actor (Mikkelsen) and Best Cinematography (Rasmus Videbæk), with a special mention from the jury to Simon Bennebjerg for the unofficial accolade of “Best Onscreen Villain.” Mikkelsen was on hand to collect the three awards on behalf of the film. The movie world-premiered at Venice and follows a poor soldier who arrives on the barren Jutland heath with a single goal: to follow the king’s call to cultivate the land and thereby achieve wealth and honor himself. Elsewhere at the awards for the festival’s 12th edition, Wim Wenders won Best Director for Perfect Days, a film that also received a special mention for Franz Lustig’s photography, and Best Actress went to Clara McGregor for her role in You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder.
