‘Mulan’ director Niki Caro says female filmmakers bring ‘all sorts of special sauce’

After multiple delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, Disney has decided to release the live-action adaptation of “Mulan” on Disney+. Niki Caro directed the movie with a $200 million budget. It’s the most expensive live-action movie directed by a woman. In Yahoo Entertainment’s new series, “Game Changers” Caro says, “That I got a great budget to do my work with, made my job easier.”. Caro shares the hardships of being a female filmmaker in the industry. She says many times she was mistaken for someone in the makeup department. “The amount of times I’ve been shoved aside because I’m a woman on the set is shocking,” she explains. If change is going to happen, Caro says women need to be invited into the room. “Women traditionally don’t get in the room,” she explains. “They don’t get on the list of directors that a studio might be interested in.” Caro has confidence that things will improve and encourages women to pursue this work, “because they can, and they should.” “Mulan” is available on Disney+ Sept. 4.
